Becoming a Motorsport Australia official opens many opportunities for you to be involved in motorsport without being a competitor. Additionally, many competitors get value from undertaking officials duties as it can help them to better understand the rules and regulations and allows them to give back to the sport they love.
Becoming a Motorsport Australia official is quite straight forward. You will need:
- A Motorsport Australia account;
- To complete the Motorsport Australia General Officials coursework and pass the assessment;
- A Working with Children check (unless you’re in WA, but we encourage it anyway); and
- To apply for an officials licence.
This document will guide you step-by-step through the entire process with the exception of applying for your Working with Children check.
To get your Working with Children check you will need to use the following resources:
- Australian Capital Territory: Working with Vulnerable People
- New South Wales: Working with Children Check
- Northern Territory: Working with Children Check
- Queensland: Blue Card
- South Australia: Working with Children Check
- Tasmania: Registration to Work with Vulnerable People
- Western Australia: Working with Children
- Victoria: Working with Children Check

- Scroll down the page and select “Officials Licences”. Make sure you don’t select the medical or coach licence types.
- Click the “Apply” button.
- Work through the application steps. Many of these will contain data from when you created your account.
- Application Details: You can just click “Create Application”
- Profile: Make sure you enter your prefix, gender and mobile phone. It is recommended to also complete other fields where possible.
- Emergency Contact: Check your emergency contacts.
- Addresses: Check your address details.
- Licences: If you intend to undertake events on an on-going basis you may choose to add a printed card.
- Health Statement: Make sure you complete this accurately; it will not impact your ability to be an official.
- Documents: If you already have a Working with Children check you can provide the details on this page. If you do not yet have this check completed you will be required to provide the details before your official’s licence will be issued.
- Terms & Conditions: You’ll have to agree to all of these. If you don’t agree then you will be unable to become a Motorsport Australia official.
- Once you’ve submitted your application you will receive a confirmation email. This email may direct you to undertake the training, but if you have followed this guide then you have already done that.
- Motorsport Australia will manually review the application and will approve it once it is complete.
If you’ve requested a printed licence card, it is recommended that you upload a photo to your profile. This photo will be printed on your licence.
Until you provide your Working with Children check your licence will be left in a “pending” state. Motorsport Australia will reach out to remind you that you need to provide this information but they cannot initiate the check on your behalf. Once you have your Working with Children check completes you can return to the “My Applications” section of the portal, edit your application and add the number.
If you do not hear from Motorsport Australia within 2 weeks, login to the portal and use the orange chat icon in the bottom right corner to enquire about the application process.
Finally, remember to download the Motorsport Australia application for your mobile phone. It will provide a digital licence that you can use when officiating at events.
